MEKONG

Mekong is an uppercase typeface inspired by hand painted signage in Vietnam. Local artists have dedicated their life to the art of hand lettered signage, making them an iconic symbol of Vietnamese culture and history. Recent urban development projects put the practice at risk, as signs are destroyed and replaced by digital alternatives. Mekong was designed to preserve this style of lettering and bring awareness to the art of Vietnamese signage.

Through feedback with Vietnamese typographers, the typeface is compatible in both Latin and Vietnamese scripts. The uppercase style, diacritical and terminal details draw from familiar characteristics in hand painted Vietnamese signs.
